学生が安心して勉学に専念でき、有意義な学生生活を過ごすことができるように、学生の立場に立って組織された各種サポート体制。就職や生活相談窓口の開設、災害補償制度など。

Various supporting systems that enable students to fully concentrate on their studies and have a meaningful campus life. They include career/employment advice, life guidance and accident compensation systems.

（大学）設置認可制度

英語表記	Approval System of the Establishment (of Universities)

大学、短期大学、高等専門学校等を設置しようとする者が文部科学大臣に認可の申請を行い、その設置の可否について大学設置・学校法人審議会の審査を経て、文部科学大臣が認可を行う制度。大学設置・学校法人審議会は、大学設置分科会、学校法人分科会の2つの分科会を有し、大学設置基準等の関係法令に基づき、大学設置分科会において教学面を、学校法人分科会において財政計画・管理運営面をそれぞれ審査する。

The systematic process for approving the establishment of a university, a junior college or a college of technology. The Council for University Chartering and School Corporation examines applications in response to requests by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The Minister subsequently makes a final decision on approval. The Council is composed of two subcommittees, one on university chartering for examining aspects of teaching and learning and the other on school corporations for financial planning and management, which conducts the process in the light of relevant laws, including the Standards for Establishment of Universities.

セメスター制

英語表記	Semester System

ひとつの授業を1年間通じて実施する通年制における前期・後期の区分とは異なり、ひとつの授業を学期（セメスター）ごとに完結させる制度。多くの大学でセメスター制が導入されている。

A system under which one academic course completes in one semester. This is different from the system which comprises divided two periods on one-year term basis. Semester system is adopted in many universities.

専攻

英語表記

Major

大学院における教育研究上の目的を達成するための基本的組織で、研究科の下に置かれる。また、学生が主に学ぶ学問分野を指す場合を専攻とも言う。その例として、主専攻以外の分野の授業科目を体系的に履修させる副専攻制度がある。
関係法令：大学院設置基準第6条

A basic structure set up under an academic unit in a graduate school for the attainment of educational and research goals. It also may refer to a field of study which a student mainly learns. An example of this usage is the "sub-major" system which is to offer course arrangements in areas other than the major.

専攻科

英語表記	Diploma Course

大学を卒業した者又はこれと同等以上の学力をもつ者を入学資格とし、精深な程度において特別な事項を教授し、その研究指導をすることを目的として大学に設置することができる、修業年限を1年以上とする課程。特別支援学校教諭養成のための専攻科など。また、短期大学及び高等専門学校においても専攻科を置くことができる。
関係法令：学校教育法第91条及び第119条

A course which offers one year or more of graduate education that requires completion of an undergraduate program or equivalent academic ability, for providing deepened and specialized education and supervising students' research activities (e.g. Diploma course for special support education teachers). A junior college or a college of technology can set a diploma course.

選択的評価事項

英語表記	Optional Evaluation Items

機構が独自に行う第三者評価として、認証評価を受けようとする申請者の希望に応じて認証評価基準とは異なる側面から大学等の活動を評価するために設けられた事項。「研究活動の状況」、「正規課程の学生以外に対する教育サービスの状況」の2つの事項に関する当該大学等の目的の達成状況について評価を行う。

Voluntary topics for review, set by NIAD-UE for subject institutions, that they may request to be evaluated in addition to the Standards for Evaluation and Accreditation. The aim is to evaluate the institution's activities from a different dimension: the conditions for research and education offered to those other than full-time students.

専門学校（専修学校専門課程）

英語表記	Professional Training College

実生活又は職業に必要な教育を行うことを目的として設置される専修学校のうち、高等学校を卒業した者を入学資格とした専門課程を設置する学校。高等教育機関として位置付けられている。

A specialized training college offering practical/vocational higher education, which requires graduation from upper secondary schools for admission.

専門職大学院

英語表記	Professional Graduate School

高度の専門性が求められる職業人を養成する大学院で、修業年限は1年から2年（法科大学院については3年）。専門職大学院の修了要件は、2年以上在学し、30単位以上の修得その他の教育課程の履修により修了することとなっている（法科大学院については3年以上在学し93単位以上修得、教職大学院については2年以上在学し45単位以上修得）。修了者には専門職学位（法科大学院については法務博士（専門職）、教職大学院については教職修士（専門職）、これ以外については修士（専門職））が与えられる。
関係法令：学校教育法第99条第2項

A graduate school which offers one or two years of education (three years for law schools) to foster experts with advanced skills. The general requirement for a degree is a minimum of two years of study with 30 or more credits and study of necessary academic programs (three years with 93 or more credits for law schools and two years with 45 or more credits for graduate school of teacher education). Students who complete are awarded a Master's Professional Degree (Juris Doctor for law schools).

専門分野別認証評価

英語表記	Certified Evaluation and Accreditation for Professional Graduate Schools

専門職大学院を評価単位とする認証評価。各専門職大学院を置く大学は5年以内毎に同評価を受けることが義務づけられている。現在機構は、法科大学院を対象とした専門分野別認証評価を実施している。
関係法令：学校教育法第109条第3項

A certified evaluation and accreditation process which professional graduate schools must undergo at least once in every five years. NIAD-UE currently conducts the evaluation of law schools.
